Clinical Advocacy for Transgender and Non-Binary Clients
Description:
As more individuals are able to live their lives as themselves, as their affirmed gender; and, as more insurance companies offer benefits inclusive of gender affirming care; more and more behavioral health providers are being contacted by transgender and non-binary individuals for support. Effective mental health treatment with transgender and non-binary clients requires clinicians to create a safe and affirming treatment environment, as well as to develop specialized clinical competencies and considerations. This interactive workshop is designed to create a shared understanding of transgender and non-binary identities and experiences, as well as help practitioners further understand the options for medical and surgical transitions for their transgender and non-binary clients. The training will help to address the biases and attitudes that can lead to gatekeeping and systemic barriers for care, as well as clinical and administrative considerations to ensure that clinical practices are affirming and inclusive from start to finish. Participants will leave with clinical competencies to better meet the need for the growing and evolving demands of their clients and their role in supporting access to affirming care.
Learning Objectives:
Name three common challenges transgender and non-binary people experience in the healthcare system.
Identify two clinical and administrative strategies that mental health professionals can implement to better support transgender and non-binary clients.
Write a client-centered and affirming letter of support for different medical and surgical transitions clients are seeking.
