Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome: Infection, Autoimmunity & Mental Illness by Psychiatry Redefined

Description:

In 1994, Susan Swedo at the NIMH first described children who developed mental health issues following a Streptococcal infection, and coined the term PANDAS—Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disease Associated with Streptococcal Disease. Since then it has become clear that multiple microbes can trigger this syndrome, and the name has been updated to PANS—Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome.

This course describes the clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, laboratory evaluation, and treatment protocols for patients with PANS. It will also detail clinical studies performed by Dr. Kinderlehrer that suggest this is a widespread problem.

This is an introductory program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess individuals and their potential risk for having PANDAS and PANS as a cause or contributing factor to mental illness

  • Identify the infectious triggers and potential sequelae of PANS and PANDAS

  • Evaluate integrative treatment options for PANS
