Description:
Diabetes Type 2 and Alzheimer’s type dementia are chronic disabling diseases that share important mental health factors. These factors include risks such as depression and PTSD, food insecurity, and pro-inflammatory foods leading to glucose imbalances. So closely related is Alzheimer’s to factors that also lead to Diabetes that it is now called Diabetes type 3. Diabetes type 2 is an established risk factor for dementia. Coping with chronic diseases like type 2 Diabetes and Alzheimer’s has numerous risk factors for mental health, including depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Emerging research suggests lifestyle intervention using nutrition and integrative health methods can prevent and sometimes even reverse both diseases.
People with type 2 Diabetes, cognitive decline and AD use integrative medicine methods at the same rate as the whole population. Clients with chronic illness like Diabetes and AD are often depressed, have challenges in self-care, and are frightened about their future. Likewise, physical practitioners must understand the holistic, mind-body approach to treatment. The new Medicare treatment model has a behavioral health and physical health care teams working together.
Diabetes and AD affect minority populations disproportionately for various reasons, which we will explore along with culture-specific interventions to effect health changes. You will learn evidence-based research, clinical skills, and tools to support patients and their families. Learn culture-specific tools to help patients restore good dietary habits, enhance adherence to self-care practice, lower medication intake, and strengthen bonds to family, community, and environment.
Diabetes commonly leads to chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, dementia, insomnia, blindness, and kidney disease. Type 2 Diabetes is depressing; stress worsens it, and self-care and program compliance are essential to survival, but adherence is often problematic for patients. Hence mental health providers benefit from this training, understanding strategies for enhancing rates if self-care adherence.
This is an intermediate program for all mental health professionals.
