Navigating Complex Trauma with EMDR Therapy

Description:

When working with complex trauma through the EMDR therapy process there is an increase potential for blocking, looping, and out of window of tolerance experiences. Therapists often run into blocking beliefs, somatic experiences, and abreactions. Because of the increase of these experiences for clients, the clinician needs more tools in their tool belt to both prepare the client for reprocessing and intervene with resources throughout the reprocessing phases. This training will walk through all 8 phases of EMDR and address the potential risk factors and resources needed when working with complex trauma.

This is an advanced program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • List at least 2 assessments that can be used to assess complex trauma in phase 1 of EMDR Therapy

  • List at least 3 resources that can be developed with clients in phase 2 to help prepare them for trauma processing.

  • Name at least 3 interweave interventions that can be used in phase 4 and 5 of EMDR therapy to help the client stay in their Window of Tolerance in reprocessing

  • Differentiate when to use the restricted protocols rather than the standard protocol when targeting complex trauma targets.

  • Name at least 2 cognitive interweaves to use when client is out of their window of tolerance.

  • Define the difference between simple and complex trauma.
