Decolonizing Mental Health Field

Description:

Colonialism has been associated with the violent imposition and overestimation of Western values on those subject to it. A cultural overestimation of western values may be seen in a variety of social systems, including those in the political, economic, educational, health care, and religious spheres. As a result of the overestimation of Western values, a non-inclusive practice of psychology may have led to further oppression of the historically colonized. This 2-hour workshop will contextualize the present mental health model, define colonization and decolonization and provide practical clinical and institutional interventions to address the decolonizing of the mental health field.

This is an introductory program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Compare Colonization and decolonization

  • Describe mental health interventions both at a personal and institutional level

  • Identify how the past elements may be connected to present relevant elements of the present mental health model
