EMDR Basic Training by Three Rivers Training Center

Description:

We will be teaching EMDR Therapy in the standard model  with a focus on children and teens. This training is tailored for licensed or license eligible mental health providers who  treat adults, children and teens  in a clinical setting. It will feature developmentally appropriate adaptations. Since EMDR Therapy is a client centered therapy and it can be used successfully with all ages especially those  who need to communicate more through actions than words.

Participants will receive a certificate of completions of Basic Training in EMDR Therapy which will allow for the provision of EMDR Therapy with a wide range of clients. Participants will also be eligible to join EMDRIA, attend further trainings in EMDR Therapy at the advanced level, participate in the EMDR Regional Meetings, and to pursue certification in EMDR Therapy.

This is a beginner level program for all mental health professionals.

Learning Objectives:

Day #1

  • Identify clinical problems treatable with EMDR Therapy

  • Discuss 3 important EMDR research studies

  • Discuss various strategies that enhance resources

  • Describe goals and procedures for Phases 1 & 2

  • Discuss the mechanism of EMDR Therapy

  • Discuss the model of EMDR Therapy

  • Discuss the methods used in EMDR Therapy

  • Identify two ways in which EMDR therapy is modified for children

Day #2

  • Describe the 8 Phases of the EMDR protocol

  • List the components of memory accessed in Phase 3

  • Describe the 3-prong protocol of EMDR Therapy

  • State how to measure the Validity of Cognition (VoC)

  • State how to measure the Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD)

  • Discuss strategies to manage the Desensitization Phase

  • Identify the 7 questions of the Assessment phase

  • Name two blocking beliefs that result in blocked processing

Day #3

  • Develop a future template

  • Describe the application of future templates

  • Describe Phase 8 re-evaluation

  • Identify appropriate interweaves for various clinical issues

  • Discuss treatment planning

  • Discuss EMD

  • Discuss Recent Events Protocol

  • List two modifications for EMDR processing with children

Day #4

  • Apply Adaptive Information Processing Theory to case conceptualization for complex trauma

  • Describe one other method of assessing dissociation with complex clients

  • Describe modifications of the protocol for complex trauma & dissociation

  • Describe clinical signs of dissociation

  • Describe 3 resources utilized in EMDR Preparation Phase 2 for more complex clients

  • Describe 2 tools used when clients abreact

Day #5

  • Describe 3 types of interweaves

  • Describe why and when interweaves are needed

  • Describe strategies for dealing with dissociative symptoms

  • Apply Adaptive Information Processing to the treatment of compulsive disorders

  • Describe resources to use with resistant clients

  • Apply in the treatment of children

Day #6

  • Discuss variations to the protocol for phobias

  • Describe variations to the protocol for illnesses

  • Describe variation to the protocol for grief

  • Identify one modification of EMDR Therapy as illustrated in the child case

  • Describe a group approach to EMDR

  • Apply future template to working with children.

About the Presenters:

Carol Miles MSW, LCSW, EMDRIA approved Basic Trainer and Consultant is a clinical social worker specializing in individual, family and group psychotherapy, maintains a private practice in Covington and New Orleans, LA with a broad spectrum of clients, and also provides consultation for therapists developing skills in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR). Carol, a graduate of LSU School of Social Work specializing in clinical social work, has over 30 years experience as a social worker in clinical, administration, and marketing with the public and private sectors.

Carol has presented at state wide conferences and to general audiences on topics ranging from eating disorders, assertiveness, EMDR, DBT and developing a private practice. She is a certified EMDR Therapist, and an EMDRIA approved consultant and trainer. She is at current member of the board of directors of EMDRIA, and serve 2 years as President of EMDRIA . (EMDRIA is the EMDR Therapy professional association for the US.) She has taught as an adjunct professor at the Tulane School of Social Work since 1998. Among her areas of expertise are working with clients who have eating disorders and trauma.

Viviana Triana, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, in the state of Texas, an EMDR Certified Therapist and Approved Consultant. Born in Colombia, South America, she considers herself bilingual and bicultural. She is passionate about learning and supporting others in their learning experiences. Since 2008 Viviana Triana has worked as a therapist with children, teens, adults, and families who have experienced trauma in settings such rape crisis and domestic violence centers. She provides consultations and training for clinicians who work with this population. Viviana has been published in professional journals in addition to contributing to the just released book EMDR with Children in the Play Therapy Room: An Integrated Approach. Currently, Viviana serves as the Clinical Director of Youth180, an organization that provides trauma centered counseling and outpatient substance use treatment for youth and their families in North Texas.
